Janelia Farm Research Campus - VA
The Janelia Farm Research Campus, developed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), is a state-of-the-art scientific research facility located in Ashburn, Virginia. The project began with a vision to create an environment where leading scientists could pursue long-term, high-risk, high-reward research.
The campus features a unique "landscape" laboratory building designed by renowned architect Rafael Viñoly. This building includes five acres of green roof and one of the world's largest installations of structural glass, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The design emphasizes collaboration and flexibility, with technologically advanced research spaces that can be easily adapted to meet changing research needs.
The construction of the Janelia Farm Research Campus involved intense planning and collaboration among people of diverse technical and professional backgrounds from around the world. The campus includes residential buildings for researchers, a fitness center, childcare programs, outdoor spaces, conference areas, and a dining facility.
When completed in early 2006, the 760,000-square-foot complex housed a permanent research staff of 200 to 300 scientists dedicated to advancing biomedical research. The campus continues to be a hub for innovation, attracting top researchers from around the globe to work on some of the toughest problems facing biologists
